“Bees, Butterflies and Birds” at the Arboretum!
The Arboretum invites families and individuals to stop by on Thursdays or Fridays from 1 to 3 p.m. between July 15th and August 20th to investigate our bee, butterflies and birds.
We will have a set of self-directed activities for you to follow and our staff can answer questions.
THE BUZZ – Watch 7000+ honeybees in our indoor observational hive as they carry in pollen and nectar from the outside, make wax and comb, raise their young and tend to the queen. See if you can find the queen or the bees guarding the entrance to the hive which is a tunnel through a window to the outside. We will have a list of activities for you and teach you the “bee dance” so you can try to locate the pollen hidden in the Stone House!
THE FLAP – we will be raising Monarch butterflies so you will be able to see them in various stages of development - from egg to adult. Learn to identify males and females and distinguish them from other similar butterflies. Learn why other species imitate the Monarch and find out how to tell a moth from a butterfly. If you are really lucky a brand new butterfly may be emerging from its chrysalis.
THE TWEET – From our indoor bird observation room you can borrow some binoculars and a field guide and look at the birds in the woodlands or at our feeders. We will give you an identification sheet to see if you can locate some of the common birds that frequent the Arboretum. When you go home you can still watch the birds on the internet from our bird-cam.
